Video Conversation: 7 Simple Questions with Creative Woman, Cherris

Writer's picture: Kandra JamesKandra James

Cheriss tells stories. Visually.

She is a professional photo journalist who provides a window into moments in time that chronicle moments of significance. She is a teacher. Through her role as an adjunct professor at one of the most prestigious HBCUs in America, Howard University in Washington DC, she prepares legions of creative storytellers to continue her legacy.

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to have and record this conversation with Cheriss. While I have known her for a while, I had no idea of the dynamic nature of her career as a professional photographer. It was eye opening to learn about her and her background, her work and her inspirations. She is inspired by photographers who mentored and coached her towards the the space that she is in and the experiences that she has had.

Through our conversation, I picked up a few notable names, such as Gordon Parks (1912-2006), one who inspired her. It is a pleasant coincidence that there is currently an exhibition of his work at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. This exhibition runs until February 18, 2019.

She also referenced Sharon Farmer, the White House photographer for the Clinton administration. I had never heard of her, but with a little internet digging, I learned that Farmer was the first African-American woman to be hired as a White House photographer, as well as the first African American and first woman to become Director of the White House Photography office.

Cheriss shared her story with me so that I could share it with others. Her story is one of a woman who was on her grind and making it happen for herself, in spite of all of the obstacles that presented themselves. She is a quiet person with a soft spoken voice.

Don’t let that fool you. Her work speaks for itself. Cheriss May is a beast with a camera making “herstory”. Check out our recorded conversation by clicking the video of my YouTube channel.

The above examples are from Cheriss's website. For more info on Cheriss and her work, visit her site at http://www.cherissmay.com/index.html.

Art is...

...an opportunity.

Art is an opportunity to view the world from a visual vantage point of the creator as well as our own personal experience as the beholder.  In my new blog series this semester, I am using this virtual space to present opportunities for viewers to learn about artworks and their artists, step into "herstory" and history to hear the stories of people, place and time and experience the works of creatives, in particular, creative women, who often are not as prevalent or well known.

Art is an opportunity.
