I personally have very little historical or contemporary knowledge of New Zealand. However, this past semester, I was exposed to the work of Lisa Reihana. She is a New Zealand artists who created a video installation that basically served as a source to correct one of the many things that history doesn't quite get right.
Her video installation, in Pursuit of Venus [infected] in which she created a video art installation that re-told the story of the British, specifically Captain Cook's, expedition to explore the Pacific Isles. Her installation is based on an 18th century French wall paper that was intended to commemorate Cook's 'finding' (which you can't find someone else's land, but that is fodder for a later post). You have to read a little between the lines, but she does nicely correct the misperception about early colonizing perceptions about encounters and consequences.
I won't go into detail because there is more than enough around Google to satisfy your curiosity. Check out the links below.
